Bangalore-Hassan Rail project to cross hurdle

The Railways might overcome one more hurdle in implementing the long pending Bangalore-Hassan Railway line project as the project implementation unit of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sent a report to its headquarters stating that the construction of over-bridges on NH 48 can be permitted to allow rails to pass through the highway.
“Our head office in Delhi recently asked for our opinion on the matter. We have sent the report stating that the overbridges can be constructed. The NHAI had denied permission for constructing box type over-bridges because of policy decision. But, now it has asked the Railways to construct bridges 14 metres above at two road crossings near Balgangadharanathanagar and Kunigal. Now, the issue might be resolved soon if the railway board takes it up with the  authorities in our headquarters in Delhi,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
According to the South Western Railway chief administrative officer Adesh Sharma,  the railways will have to elevate tracks 10 km on either side of the road if it has to construct the bridge over the road.
This would cost the railways an additional `100 crore.
According to the original alignment, the line was supposed to pass through Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway (NH 48)near Balgangadarnathanagar and Kunigal.
The NHAI withheld the permission to let the Railways lay the line below the highway.
In the past
The railway line was sanctioned in 1996 during H D Deve Gowda’s tenure as the prime minister.
The Railways had completed earth works and bridges on Nelamangala-Solur, Kunigal-Yediyur and Hirisave and Shravanabelagola stretches before halting the works due to financial constraints.
Moreover, the state government could not procure Kunigal Stud Farm’s land for the project on the Solur-Kunigal stretch.
The Railways resumed the work on the project after the state government had offered to bear 50 per cent of its cost.
